History of North Ranch at a glance

  • The general area currently occupied by North Ranch, Westlake Village, and Thousand Oaks was originally home to the Chumash Native Americans, a tribe that originated from California’s central and southern coastal regions. Several Chumash sites still exist in the area today for anyone interested in learning more about their history.

  • During the late 1800s, modern-day North Ranch and its surrounding communities were purchased by the Russell brothers for cattle ranching. The area became known as “Russell Ranch” and was eventually sold to William Randolph Hearst in 1925. In 1943, Hearst sold the property to Fred Albertson in 1943.

  • Starting in the 1900s, North Ranch, Westlake Village, and Thousand Oaks became popular filming locations. Several television shows were filmed here, including “Little House on the Prairie,” “The Rockford Files,” and “The Dukes of Hazzard.” North Ranch itself was used as a film set for a few episodes of “Tarzan” and several popular westerns like “Buck Rogers” and “Gunsmoke.”

  • North Ranch was considered an unincorporated community until January 1973 when the City of Thousand Oaks approved its annexation. This made the community an official neighborhood of Thousand Oaks.
