Agoura Hills is a city within Los Angeles County. It is in the eastern Conejo Valley and is locatedbetween the Simi Hills and the Santa Monica Mountain. The city is on the border between the county of Los Angeles to the east, west and south and Ventura County to the north.
Agoura Hills began to grow in the late 1960s after the section of the 101 Fwy was built through the city’s heart, isolating its northern half from its south. The first housing tracts in Agoura were Hillrise, Liberty Canyon and the Lake Lindero communities. Rapid growth continued during the 1970s, when schools were built and much of downtown erected.
In 1982, the residents of the City of Agoura Hills voted in favor of cityhood by a 68% majority. Agoura Hills became the 83rd City in Los Angeles County.
The 1980s was a period of tremendous growth, with large land areas being subdivided into planned development housing tracts and a great wave of migration of people into the city. Many of the planned developments were the Morrison Homes, which are today still the major communities in the area. In the 1990s, numerous businesses set up shop in the city, and downtown filled with shops and restaurants.
The area employment consists mainly of the surrounding employment centers and most residents commute to the San Fernando Valley or Los Angeles area for work. Agoura Hills is the official location for the headquarters for the Los Angeles Rams.
Housing in the local area consists of planned communities, condos, townhomes as well as apartment homes. The area is home to some of the top local schools as well as newer shopping centers, parks and recreational activities that include hiking and biking trails.
